The fauna of Peräjärvi is quite typical for the Finnish countryside. The only visible animals are the moose, pike and wasps while the others can only be heard. The moose and the pike can be used for food.

Moose[]

Hirvivaara

A moose warning sign along the highway.

Main article: Moose

Moose are the only land animals seen around Peräjärvi. They can only be encountered from late evening to early morning, crossing the dirt roads or the highway in certain areas. The moose can usually be seen crossing the roads near the warning signs.

Dead moose

A high-speed collision usually proves fatal for both the driver and the moose. The Satsuma will often be greatly deformed after a collision with the moose; they are very sturdy animals and not something the player would want to hit at great speed. Drive carefully at night to leave yourself sufficient reaction time to hit your brakes.

Pike[]

Main article: Pike

Pikes are fish that are found at the lake Peräjärvi, most commonly in the waters around the island, also in the river at Loppe. Pikes can be caught with the fish trap found on the porch of the cottage on the island. They appear only when caught; they are not seen swimming in the lake.

Birds[]

Various birds can be heard singing throughout the day, including:

  • Cuculus canorus, common cuckoo (käki) - can be heard from midnight until 6 AM.
  • Gavia Arctica, black-throated loon (kuikka) - makes a high pitched wail, can be heard from 6 AM until noon and then from 6 PM until midnight.
  • Fringilla coelebs, common chaffinch (peippo) - can be heard from noon until 6 PM.
  • Columba palumbus, common wood pigeon (sepelkyyhky) - makes a cooing sound, can be heard from 6 PM until midnight.
  • Scolopax rusticola, eurasian woodcock (lehtokurppa) - sounds like a frog.

Dogs[]

Though dogs cannot be seen anywhere, they can be heard barking incessantly at night.

Insects[]

Bumblebees[]

Bumblebees can temporarily blind the player, if he drives a windshield-less vehicle at high speeds (over 72 km/h) without wearing a helmet.

Flies[]

Flies can be heard buzzing around the player when dirtiness gets too high. Use the shower to decrease dirtiness and get rid of the flies.

Grasshoppers[]

Grasshoppers don't exist in a visual form and can only be heard chirping at around the dump next to the airfield.

Mosquitoes[]

Mosquitoes make an annoying high-pitched noise which can be heard every evening. You can get rid of the mosquitoes for a short period by using the mosquito repellent spray, available at Teimo's shop.

Wasps[]

Wasp Close up

The player character is allergic to wasps, meaning only a few stings cause death. If one is getting chased by a wasp, the only way to escape is to run into a body of water and hide below the surface, whilst taking care not to drown. One wasp can sting the player only once, after which it will fly off. Due to the player being deathly allergic to wasps, a singular sting will cause a slight loss of vision, and if the player gets stung over 4 times in a row, they will collapse and die.

Wasp nests[]
Main article: Wasp nest

There are two wasp nests - one inside the Ruscko and another in the attic of the abandoned farmhouse. The former needs to be destroyed by either dipping the car into a lake or using a fire extinguisher at night, while the latter can be passed by hugging the wall. Shortly after the player gets within 2 meters of a wasp nest, a total of 6 wasps will fly out and start chasing the player.

Lone wasps[]

Two lone wasps can be found flying around, one each at the strawberry field and the landfill. The chances of crossing paths with one are quite low. If you get within 0.5 meters of a lone wandering wasp, there is a 30% chance for it to start chasing the player. The player doesn't really have to worry about lone wasps, since they attack very rarely and the player can't die from just one sting.
