The Mikropekka computer (full model MIKROPEKKA TURBO X33) is a computer (Fin: Tietokone) that can be bought for 6,495 mk after receiving the advertisement for it in the mail. After waiting 1 hour real time, a delivery fee of 60 mk is also added to that price. Once installed at home, it can be used by walking to the chair in front of the desk and pressing , and exited by looking backwards and pressing . The computer can be turned on by pressing the power button in front of the case and can also be reset by pressing the reset button next to the power button.

The computer offers two pieces of pre-installed software: the Pieno music maker, and the TeleBBS dialler. Additional games can be found on floppy disks as well as the Con-Line BBS via TeleBBS, allowing for game downloads to the computer's hard drive for local play.

Acquisition[]

The computer can be ordered by clicking on an advertisement pamphlet for the computer that eventually appears in the home mail box, spawning an envelope containing a filled order form that needs to be sent to the post box at Teimo's shop. The order works in the same way as parts ordered from the parts catalog; the payment happens once the order arrives at the shop, after which it will appear in a cardboard box on the loading dock. The box contains four parts for the computer: the case, monitor, keyboard & mouse, and speakers.

Once the parts have been taken home, the computer can be assembled on the desk inside the player's room. Check marks will appear when the parts are hovered over the correct spots, and pressing LMB will place them on the table. The modem will also need to be plugged in to the telephone line in order to access the bulletin board, necessitating the phone being unplugged.

OS commands[]

RS-POS command line

The "RS-POS" command line.

Main article: RS-POS

The computer runs on a DOS-like RS-POS operating system which provides a command-line interface that accepts several commands and instructions. Entering an invalid command yields the "The system cannot find the path specified" error message. The operating system supports a limited range of commands:

  • Players can access either an inserted floppy disk or the hard disk by typing a: and c: respectively, allowing the player to issue commands to or load software from a specific drive.
  • Running an installed program is accomplished by simply typing the filename of an executable program (for example, c:\>pieno and a:\>rapula). It is not necessary to include their file extensions (*.exe or *.jpg) in the run command.
  • Pressing Alt + Q, or the physical reset button, at any point during a program will terminate it and return the user to the command line.
  • Entering dir will list any installed programs or files in the current disk. This is useful to identify the correct filenames to enter.
  • copy commands can be used to copy files from floppy disks to the hard drive, although it is not possible vice versa. The full command is copy a:\*.* c:.
  • The computer has an semi-functional os command that triggers the computer to generate loading noises before returning a "The system cannot find the path specified" message. This is unique as other erroneous commands simply display the message without activating loading noises. The command is suggested to refer to the operating system itself.
  • A data wipe via manual disk formatting is possible by typing format a: for an inserted floppy disk or format c: for the hard drive. However, formatting c: effectively renders the computer permanently unusable as there is no in-game installation disk to reinstall RS-POS, and no boot disk to load a disk-based operating system during startup. The computer will still turn on, but the player will be given a "Insert boot disk and press RETURN..." instruction, followed by an "Error reading disk" message and no further activity. At this point the only solution is to use a save editor to revert the wipe, or minimally restore os to the computer.

Software[]

The computer comes with two pre-installed programs, Pieno and TeleBBS, but four additional games contained in floppy disks can be found in specific locations, while 12 more software can be acquired through downloading from the Files section of the Con-Line BBS.

In total there are 18 different pieces of software, or 19 if the Con-Line bulletin board service is counted.

Trivia[]

  • The Mikropekka is based on the real-life MikroMikko (possibly 3TT.M125) released by Nokia during the 1980s. Mikko and Pekka are both common Finnish male names.
  • This computer likely has the i386 microprocessor, as suggested by references in the game code.
  • An ad for the Mikropekka was included in a 2018 issue of the Finnish Retro Rewind magazine. Notably it is a full-colored version of the in-game black-and-white pamphlet advertising the computer.
  • A DOS virus can be obtained upon downloading any of the TeleBBS games if My Summer Car was not launched through Steam. This is a form of anti-piracy measure.
    • After starting any installed TeleBBS game, resetting or rebooting the computer will activate the virus payload during RS-POS startup.
    • Once the payload is activated, the computer begins to make noises and a red ASCII spider travels across the screen in 5-second loops. A message mockingly asks, in English, if you are "enjoying your new computer" and suggests that you "make your mother buy a new one". The virus will then proceed to format the c: drive.
    • After restarting the computer post-format, the player will encounter a screen prompting them to insert an installation disk. As there is no installation disk in-game, the computer will forever remain in a broken state (unless a save editor is used to revert the effects).
  • Most of the Mikropekka games and programs have their own achievements with a unique floppy disk icon.
  • You can die from electrocution by urinating on the computer. Doing so would complete the "What a shock!" achievement.
