Rapula (Hangover - krapula - without the k) is a side-scrolling adventure game that can be played on the Mikropekka computer at home. The diskette for the game can be found at Jokke's new house. As the game is on a floppy disk, a: must first be typed in to the command line to access the disk drive. The game can then be accessed with the rapula command and, as with most other games, terminated by pressing Q. The goal of the game is to get Mr. Rapula safely to the store to obtain the "hair of the dog".

Plot[]

A simple plot for the game and its protagonist, Mr. Rapula, is shown as a horizontally scrolling text on the screen when the game is launched:

Mr. Rapula had a long night. This morning he is not feeling well. Everything is an annoyance. You must guide Mr. Rapula to get the "hair of the dog" (AKA. loiventava) to help him get through the day. Good luck!

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is very simple, the only control the player has is moving left and right, as well as jumping. The objective of the game is to get through 20 different levels while avoiding various enemies. The player gets ten lives at the start of the game; dying with spare lives resets the current level, and dying at 0 lives left ends the game. A full playthrough of the game can be found here.

Enemies[]

There are 12 different kinds of enemies in the game. Each level has its own set of enemies. Coming in contact with any of them kills Mr. Rapula and forces the level to be restarted (or the entire game if no lives were left).

  • Ball - The ball can only be found in the last level, where it hovers back and forth on the screen.
  • Bat - Similar to the birds; the bats can move in different patterns all over the screen depending on the level.
  • Bird - Similar to the bats; the birds can move in different patterns all over the screen depending on the level.
  • Box - The boxes move statically across the screen in a rectangular pattern; up & down slowly, and left & right quickly.
  • Cat - Much like dogs; the cats only move from right to left on the screen.
  • Clock - The first encountered enemy type, only appears twice.
  • Death - Death is a unique enemy which kills Mr. Rapula if he moves while it is facing towards him.
  • Dog - Much like cats; the dogs only move from right to left on the screen.
  • Doppelganger - The final enemy of the game; as the name suggests, it is identical in appearance to Mr. Rapula.
  • Hand - The hands appear in the graveyard levels. They protrude from the soil in front of gravestones when the player gets close to them.
  • Light - The lamp posts emit bright light straight down from the bulb. The player must wait for them to turn off in order to pass through.
  • Tyre - The tyre is only encountered once in the game; it bounces towards the left of the screen from the right-hand side.

Levels[]

There are a total of 20 levels in Rapula, each of them having a unique label which can be seen at the top of the screen. The player will respawn at the start of the current level should they die, unless they have no lives left. The enemies move in a non-randomised sequence which makes the levels trivial after just a few attempts.

Level 01: Home bittersweet home Level 02: Fresh air allergy
The first level consists of only an alarm clock which can simply just be jumped over. This level consists of a single bird which can be avoided by holding down the right arrow key through the entire level.
Level 03: A long way ahead Level 04: A long day ahead
This level consists of a single cat which can be simply jumped over. It will reappear from the right once it leaves the screen. This level consists of two birds, keep holding down the right arrow key through this one as well.
Level 05: Sweat is my shower Level 06: Darn, it's bats in the barn
This level consists of a cat and a dog, simply jump over both of them. These animals will also reappear once they've gone off-screen. This level consists of two bats; wait until the left-most one has passed, and jump over the other one once it's low enough.
Level 07: The early cat catches the bird Level 08: Shoes are a poor man's taxi
This level consists of a cat and a bird; wait for the bird to fly up, then jump over the cat. The cat will reappear once it's gone off-screen. This level consists of a tyre; the only tyre in the game. It bounces up and down towards the left-hand side of the screen from the right, simply jump over it once it's on the ground. The tyre will reappear once it's gone off-screen.
Level 09: A jump into Hades Level 10: She left 18 years ago...
This level consists of two birds which pass through each other by going up and down. Wait until one of the birds is coming down and jump through them when the bird is at about waist level. This level consists of a horizontally moving bat and two hands which appear once the player gets close enough. Wait until the bat has moved away and jump over the hands.
Level 11: ...But she still nags from beyond Level 12: Hades: easy to enter, hard to exit
This level consists of a vertically moving bat and three hands. Wait until the bat starts moving up again and start jumping over the hands. This level consists of four bats in groups of two moving vertically. As with the birds; wait until one of the bats moves down to waist level to jump over them.
Level 13: So many bright lights Level 14: Who needs eyes anyway?
This level consists of four lamp posts which beam down light in a sequence from right to left. Simply walk forward when a light is turned off. This level consists of four more lamp posts, beaming down light in groups. Simply move forward again when a light has turned off.
Level 15: Turn off the lights, please Level 16: Avoid
This level consists of four lamp posts which beam down light at the same time in a sequence, an alarm clock also periodically moves towards the left-hand side of the screen from the right. Wait until the clock has moved to the light next to the character, jump forwards, and keep moving to the centre. Then wait for the clock to reappear, jump vertically over it, and immediately start moving right when the lights turn off, jump forward over the clock again once it reappears. This level consists of a cube moving counter-clockwise in a rectangular pattern. Keep moving forward until you reach the middle, wait for the cube to touch the bottom-left corner, and jump vertically. Afterwards keep moving right.
Level 17: Avoid, avoid Level 18: Do not move, Death is staring!
This level consists of two cubes which move exactly the same way as the previous level. Keep moving right until the first cube reaches the corner, and jump backwards over it. Continue moving right until the second cube gets close and jump forward over it, wait for the cube to move up, and pass through. This level consists of a black face which faces left and right periodically; only move forward when it is facing right. The face will die when touched by the player.
Level 19: Time for self-reflection, no? Level 20: A cure for illness
This level consists of an orb and a mirrored version of Mr. Rapula. Simply jump up so that the orb hits the doppelganger in the head, and walk right. The last level consists of 12 beer bottles; pick them up and walk to the cashier to win the game.
